Among all the beautiful islands of Central Dalmatia, we only had time to visit one. Hvar was our choice! Once arrived in Stari Grad, we visited Vrboska and Jelsa for first. Then we headed to Hvar City, on the western side of the island. Despite, this part tends to be known mainly for nightlife, I can assure you that this is not the case!
We decided to spend several nights here in Hvar, we wanted to take a break from our ever-wandering tour of Croatia. During these days we had the chance to live the town, discovering its hidden spots and enjoying a very restful life, made of breakfast, beach, light lunch, afternoon nap, and dinner.
The beaches in Hvar we loved the most
First of all, I need to make a clarification. Many beaches in this part of the islands are well equipped – and we visited some of them. Nonetheless, sometimes you just need to leave your staff on a rock and enjoy the nature ad it comes, free and savage. Below you’ll find a list of the beaches we liked the most.
#1 Malo Zaraće
Only 15 min far from the city center, this beach was our favorite. When you leave the main street, you’ll have to go down for a steep path; there won’t be enough space for two cars together, but this is not such a popular destination, so you won’t find that many cars anyway. Once you reach a crossroads to go either to the right or to the left, you arrived. Find a parking slot here, and then reach the beach.
The beach is in both directions: on the left, there is also a restaurant. But in case you choose to go right (like we did) you will only find a private property, a tiny church, and a great sea.
Please remember this beach is not equipped: you will find food and water only on the other side, where the restaurant is. My recommendation is to bring a light lunch and some water with you. And be sure to arrive early, otherwise, all the best places will be gone and you will only be able to find a spot with no shades at all. Then, all you will need is a good book and sunscreen. And you are set for the day!
#2 Carpe Diem
One day, we decided to treat ourselves properly. And we did so, by going to Carpe Diem in Paklinski Islands. This beach resort is not exactly in Hvar, it is situated in one of the islands in front of Hvar; so you will need to get on a boat to reach it: the resort offers free boat-transfer from Hvar port and return. But before getting on the boat, you should make a reservation some days in advance, to get the best sunbeds right in front of the sea.
Carpe Diem is a popular destination for both day and night. During the day you can treat yourself with a beautiful beach, great staff, beach service, and a great location. At night, it is famous for party and dj-set.
We really have good memories of this day at Carpe Diem: we arrived early, almost no other clients were there already. And we left at sunset. An entire day of good vibes and relax.
#3 Pokonji Dol
Pokonji Dol is another beach we really enjoyed! Even closer than Malo Zarace to the town, this beach has a big parking area and a nice restaurant with sunbeds and parasols, called Mustačo. They are not super efficient or very friendly. Neither is the close restaurant on the left named after the beach…
However, since we go to enjoy the sea and the sun, I would recommend this beach as well. Moreover, there is also plenty of free beaches, so you can also bring your own parasol.
The view from the top of Hvar City
The Spanish Fortress offers a great view of Hvar. You can reach it either by car or on foot. Once you reached the top, enjoy the beautiful panorama, the view of Hvar and the Paklinski Islands on the background. A nice way to say goodbye to the island!
