So… It’s time to go to the islands! Hvar, Brač, Vis, Korčula… Judging from pictures online I can easily tell the are all truly beautiful. Unfortunately, we only had time to visit one. And we choose Hvar. Before heading to Lesina, the most popular area of the island, we spent one day going from Stari Grad – where the ferry from Split docked – to less popular Vrboska and Jelsa.
Vrboska: a quick – and super hot – lunch stop
Our first stop was Vrboska. Only 10 minutes far from Stari Grad by car, it seemed almost surreal. We reached this small port town at lunchtime. The sun was high and extremely hot and there were so few people around… I guess they were just relaxing at the beach enjoying some fresh seawater.
We didn’t actually have much time, so we just went for a quick walk along the dock and stopped for light lunch at Trica Gardelin. A quiet place, under the sun-umbrellas, nice staff, good food. And such a calm. After many days of traveling, you sometimes need to stop and just enjoy the moment. And also the delicious grilled octopus!
Jelsa: a relaxing afternoon at the beach
Once left Vrboska, we drove to Jelsa. And in 15 minutes we were already swimming in a nice inlet.
We choose Beach Mina to have some rest under the threes. The area was a bit crowded, with many kids all around. But if you look carefully, you will be able to find a quiet and private space.
My opinion about Vrboska and Jelsa
Both these towns are not a “must” visit when traveling to Hvar. But they can surely be your first stop to start admiring the beautiful views this island offers. Take some time to relax here and then pack to go to the town of “movida” – a term of Spanish origin used to describe a particular situation of entertainment and youthful nightlife in a city.
