When thinking of Belgium, Bruges is the first city that comes to my mind. However, another city is making itself some space on the international scene. And this is Ghent. Halfway between Bruxelles and Bruges, this small city is a perfect destination for a one-day trip!
10 Things to Do in Ghent
#1 Start with a walk on the riversides
Start your visit of Ghent with a walk along the Graslei and the Korenlei banks of the Leie river, which runs through this small town. In spring and summertime, this area of Ghent will get very crowded with people enjoying the sun. From here, admire Saint Michael’s Church on one side and Grasbrug bridge on the other side.
#2 Visit Gravensteen Castle
Ancient home of the counts of Flanders, this castle dominates the center of Ghent and has a beautiful view of the river and the city. The best spot to take great pictures of the castle from the outside is from Sint-Widostraat.
After the visit, take a few minutes to have a quiet walk in the quiet alleys of Patershol.
#3 Explore the Northern section of the old city
Take some time to just wander around this area of Ghent, and stop to enjoy Vrijdagmarkt – a large square with cafes all around, now home to the Friday market – and Dulle Griet – a large red cannon dating back to the Middle Ages.
#4 Admire Werregarenstraat
Werregarenstraat is a narrow alleyway famous for its street art decorating the walls. Very nice spot for pictures!
#5 Visit the old city centre
Ghent is nice also to just have a walk around: be sure you take some time to discover the small alleys together with the big squares in the area between Graslei and the Reep. Top places to visit are:
- Korenmarkt, a historic town square surrounded by notable buildings & restaurants & cafés with outdoor seating perfect for a sunny lunch;
- Ghent City Hall – Stadhuis
- Stadshal, a weird building resembling a modern barn;
- Belfort, the bell tower of the city, become a Unesco World Heritage Site;
- Saint Bavo’s Cathedral, to admire the infamous Adoration of the Mystic Lamb;
- Castle of Gerald the Devil, used as a knights’ residence, an arsenal, a monastery, a school, and for many other purposes in the last centuries.
My opinion about Ghent
Ghent was such a nice discovery! We really enjoy spending a day in this young and vibrant city. Yes, in my opinion, Bruges remains the undisputed queen of Belgium. Nonetheless, give Ghent also a chance because it is really worth it.
