Budapest: Thermal Baths

Thermal baths, Budapest, Hungary

Budapest is very well known for its thermal baths: Romans started benefiting from Budapest’s thermal waters already 2,000 years ago. Many visit these baths for specific wellness reasons; others – like us – to try this nice experience in great settings!

Our experience at Gellért Thermal Bath

Thermal baths, Budapest, Hungary

Of one thing we were sure: we wanted to spend some time exploring thermal baths. But the question was: which ones? Therefore, after some good researches online, we realized the best for us was Gellért Thermal Bath.

The queue

As this is a very popular activity, especially among tourists, be ready to find queue during high season or at festivity time. The first day that we tried to go for thermal baths – as I described here – the wait was about 2 hours: it was a rainy day and many people opted for thermal baths. But this second time, the weather was much better and many people preferred to spend time in the open air. So we only waited for 15 minutes, which is ok.

What to bring to the thermal baths

I highly recommend to bring your own:

  • bathing-suit
  • flip-flop
  • pool-towel
  • waterproof phone cover

You can also rent them once you pay the entrance ticket (except for the waterproof phone cover). So don’t you worry if you forget anything!

Then, you will have access to changing rooms and to lockers to leave all of your belongings that you don’t need in the pools.

What to expect

Surely a good relaxing experience in a beautiful location. The building of Gellért Thermal Baths is an art nouveau beauty that will leave you speechless. There are 8 different pools, where the temperature of the water goes from 19° to 38°. Useless to say, in these pools it is not allowed to dive or splash water. Rather, it is a place to relax and calm down, benefiting from the effects of the thermal waters on our body and mind.
